About Best Watercolor Brushes

Our Mission

We exist to help watercolor artists find the right brushes without wasting money on trial and error. Every brush on this site has been tested in our studio across multiple painting sessions before we recommend it.

How We Test

Every brush goes through our standardized 5-point evaluation:

1. Water Retention

How much water does the brush hold? We measure by counting full strokes from a single load across 140lb cold press paper.

2. Point Quality

Does the brush maintain a sharp tip? We test with detail work at size 2, 6, and 12, evaluating precision after 5, 20, and 50 painting sessions.

3. Snap-Back

How quickly does the brush return to shape? We bend the bristles at 45° and 90° and measure recovery across natural hair, synthetic, and blend brushes.

4. Durability

How does the brush hold up over weeks and months? We track bristle shedding, ferrule loosening, handle finish wear, and point degradation over 50+ sessions.

5. Value

What do you get per dollar? We calculate a performance-per-dollar score to help artists at every budget level find the best option.
